This blog is partially produced with genetic engineering

"Some people change for the better , some for the worse - either way most change back ."

Some dude

I noticed the other day my body wash says "use only as directed" on the bottle . First of all I don't believe I have received any direction in it's use . Also what sort of illicit uses are they worried about ? What can I do with soap that would cause the company concern ?

I noticed that my allergy medicine says on the bottle "do not use if over 65" . Why is that ? What does allergy medicine do that's bad for you ? Or is it just that old people are on a lot of medications and they're worried about interactions ?

I noticed a box of light bulbs says on it "turn off power before changing bulbs" . Does anyone actually do that ? That seems like something people in the 1800's would do when the light bulb first came around . And they probably still died half the time .

I noticed my soda bottle said on it "partially produced with genetic engineering" . Which seemed odd to me because there's really nothing organic in soda anymore . But I has corn syrup in it which is made from , you know corn , which is probably genetically modified . I mentioned this and someone went on a crazy rant about genetically modified honey and I said that made no sense to me - honey isn't a thing you can genetically modify , that's like saying genetically modified rocks . And its not even the bees that are genetically modified , it's the corn syrup that they feed the bees which comes from genetically modified corn (again) . That's 4 steps removed - seems like a stretch . Also most honey isn't even honey , its corn syrup (again) they call honey . Also I don't care because honey is gross .

A lot of people get REALLY upset about GMOs and I don't know of they should be or not but what do know is that none of them can tell me why they think they're bad (usually their reasons have nothing to do with genetic engineering) and that genetic modification has been going on for thousands of years - plant and animal (and human) breeding and such . So is what bothers people direct manipulation of the genome ? Again I ask why .

Speaking of things people have been doing for thousands (millions in this case) of years I'm about to start reading a book about the science of human sexuality and it puts me of a mind of a book I read a while back about a couple that decided to have sex every day for a year . I want to say it was called "Just do it" but I assume Nike would have sued them until they were dead if it was . The trajectory was kind of interesting - at the outset it was fun and new and a challenge , and then in the middle it became a grind and they hated it and wanted to quit , and then at the end they claimed to be having the best sex of their marriage . But the really interesting thing is the post-script , once the experiment was over they fell back into the same patterns of their old sex life , with which they weren't really satisfied .

What's the most days in a row you've had sex ? I'm not sure for me but I would bet maybe 4-5 days at most . So they got me beat by a mile . Some couples claim to have sex multiple times every day , I don't really believe it but they don't call me Doubting Jimmy the Doubter for nothing . I would be shocked if many people had sex even 30 days in a row . I wonder if there's a porn parody of 30 Days of Night . Looks like there isn't . Will the porn industry ever stop disappointing me ? Probably not .

The book I am reading is about a variety of non-sexy science topics and one thing I've realized is that while animal testing is definitely messed up and wrong morally it seems like we wouldn't know anything without all the horrible shit scientist did to animals back in the 40s and 50s . Almost every chapter , and this is about modern science , they reference work done back then and something terrible being done to animals . Also what's interesting is how many science people working for the military (but not in the military) are women . One of these women did a bunch of tests about 1st and 2nd degrees burns on herself . And at first I was all like "whoa , this lady is hardcore" but then I wondered if maybe she's just a masochist .

And I feel like I stumbled onto a golden opportunity there . Instead of torturing animals lets get all the masochists and put them to work . Seems like a win-win . But will I even get any funding for this project ? No . Thanks Obama .

Speaking of Thanks Obama officially needs to go away . Along with "said no one ever" , "that moment when" and "that's what she said" . Enough already .

In conclusion did you know that if you break your heel this will result in amputation of the foot 45% of the time ? I didn't . And that the noise level of a chainsaw causes hearing damage after 30 minutes ? Or that somewhere around 10% of under 17 have hearing damage from iPods and such ? And that I love you ?

Sounds like kids should invest in hearing aid companies.

Speaking of old school GMO (i.e. selective breeding) - you have to find the video on the internet about the Russian researchers who managed to domesticate foxes in only 50 years, just through selective breeding. Fascinating stuff.
(I know I know, you're thinking 50 years is a really long time but apparently "normal" foxes have a strong wild streak and are not easy at all to make into pets).

Another phrase that needs to be retired - "you win the internet".

I've seen it , it made me sad because to my cynical brain the moral was "there's no animal that's so cool we can't make it our slave"
