I'm pretty new to this blogging thing and was wondering about the protocol. Do people who post comments expect the blogger to respond to their comments?

 I think that some people expect the person to respond with some sort or response to what they had to say. Some, like me, respond so that the person knows what my thoughts are on the subject, and if they feel they have something to add, they reply. And some use it as a way to establish communication since they are standard members and can not view profiles or send messages directly.

 I don't think I have had a comment posted on my blog so can't really say from experience. I would say it depends on whether the blog writer feels inclined to respond to the comment. I would say no set rules, it's personal choice.

 I do not expect bloggers to respond to my comments. That being said there are those who do and there are blogs where people seem to carry on extended conversations. Personally, I seldom go back to see if a blogger responded to a comment of mine.

If I respond to a blogger's posts, I do expect them to visit my blog on a periodic basis. I do not expect that they will leave comments there, but if they do, so much the better. I have blogs I watch where the bloggers have never visited my blog; but it takes an exceptional blog for me to continue watching if there is no reciprocity.

That doesn't help does it.
I would have thought that unless they are asking a question then there's no need.
If you get a lot of comments, you could spend all day on it.
It's down to you if you think any correspondence demands a response.

 I don't, but some folks do. I generally try to respond to folks but am not always successful.
