Demise of A F F Chatrooms? For many years (@10) I was an active chatter in local groups and chatrooms. I made close friends of all kinds. Some for romantic or sexual purposes, others just to share opinions and thoughts with and my everyday life. We had online relationships as well as saw each other in person on a regular basis. As the people closer to my age and location slowly moved on I frequented the rooms less and less. I now occasionally check in and no one is there. Where there used to be 20-50 people chatting anytime of day or night, there is barely a few. I was wondering if this was the same elsewhere, in other locations. Has the membership changed so much that no one is here to communicate (including fun sexual banter)? Is the fact that now most are on their phones and not using a computer changed our online activities? I never thought I'd get over the addiction of compulsive chatting here...many hours a day. Hours of fun. But, I did, and apparently most everyone else did too. |

Over all the chat rooms have drooped way off . I think the smart phones have a lot to do with that . It's sad because I loved the chat rooms . We have one called Cyber Snobs Cyber Snobs drop in sometime I guess it's just the cowboy in me

I just started to go in one of the chatrooms and since I don't live in those rooms like some folks do, I am totally lost when it comes to knowing things about certain individuals. I have become friends with a few women in the room and they are bringing me up to speed. OMFG its like romper room and not in a good way! Childish, insecure, keyboard warriors that have managed to find their way to the internet. What really gets me are the lonely people. Not sure if they are just playing a song or are really lonely. I think I shall go back to ready my Danielle Steel books. Thanks for sharing.

I use to chat in the BBW chat room. think that is how you and I met as well as a few that have commented here. I stopped by a couple time recently. It is a new group and not the same.

Agree and I think phone access has taken over so less people in the chat rooms. Similarly the IM function has dropped off also. Most people show as being online and just have their phone app on so never see it...

When I first joined over ten years ago, maybe fifthteen there would be over a hundred people at times in the ny room. I go less often and stay less. Sometimes only a minute or two. Just today I scrolled back and saw when I entered three hours earlier. Never seen it that slow ever. For the past few months most times nobody but me is in there. Part of why less go is the one regular who calls people fat, gay, trailer trash, on welfare etc. For some reason I can't block his name. He does change it every few weeks at the most. Yes I know how to block names but can't his. People come in and see how slow it is so leave right away. Humans are the most dangerous animals on earth. If only animals had the ability to know when to keep away from us humans they would be better off.

I never really thought of how much mobile devices have impacted the downward spiral of the chat rooms, seems to make a good deal of sense. While you are right in that lots of folks have moved on the for me they just aren't as much fun as before. Good humored banter has been replaced by dullards & a serious lack of social skills. I still pop in occasionally though just not nearly as often.

i sooooo agree and i miss it. Miss the banter....miss the connections.....miss the drama. The Lobby seems to be full most times, but are any connections being made there.....i dunno. I think its a combination of the site change /confines and our population becoming more technologically mobile. Ive been wandering these halls 10 plus years with a lapse in between, but its just a different feel altogether. Thank goodness i was a room hopper...so i have a few familiar faces in differing places. One of the rooms i frequented years ago......doesnt even show up on my screen anymore. Ugh !! Is it the end of an era ?? Sad !!

Today I looked at the local groups and the most recent activities were about a year old. Seems Baffies might be correct in predicting the end.

I used to be addicted to the chatrooms too. I made some really great friends there, and we are still friends now. I don't think any of us chat here anymore. But my lord did we have fun! We would rush home from work and spend hours online chatting and/or camming.  Then a bunch of nasty people came along, and quite frankly, I don't need the hassles from people I don't know or respect that I was getting. When they started flat out hoping for me to suffer physical injuries up to death was when it was time for me to hit the road. Now I think you hit it on the head - I don't know if you can access the chatrooms from ipads or cellphones, but even if you can, I'm sure you can't see enough of the screen to make it fun. It is kind of odd, because I don't think you can turn OFF the IM when you are on your cellphone. What's the deal with all that? 2022... it HAS be better, right?!

Been a long time since I posted anything! When I went to the AZ chat room a few times a few years ago there was a lot of trash talk. So it wasn't very appealing and I haven't gone back. I would guess that IM may have taken over the role some rooms played. Personally I prefer IM since you don't have to talk over people. When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

Spot on, but it's not just the chat rooms, even though I only joined my first one a couple of months ago, and not usually well populated ie 4 or 5 tops usually I would prefer one on one chats frankly but even the options for that are declining as is overall quality of the site, and the blogs etc. I think the blogs and those who are fragile snowflakes have had a dreadful impact on people and their willingness to engage (let alone the sexual banter)

I remember when the chat rooms had about 200 people and it was very difficult to get noticed. Or even read the text on the screen it went past so quickly. Roll on a few years and the numbers dwindled to around 50 or so on a good night. A bit less cliquey too. Made a few friends and acquaintances at the time and it was a decent way of spending some time and having a bit of a laugh even if you weren't looking for someone. Recently rejoined the site after a two year sabbatical and now there are maybe five members in the room if you are lucky. As you noticed, there are fewer younger people joining (they're all using mobile phone apps) and the numbers are consequently on a decline. It wouldn't surprise me if the site was making a loss these days and it gets closed.
