Mourning a Fallen Hero I sit here trying to gather my thoughts. On Tuesday a dear friend and law enforcement officer in my state was brutally gunned down. It was a senseless act of gang-related violence. He leaves behind three and a fourth on the way. He was more than a friend actually. Were it not for him, I would not have graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center. See, I was in the military prior to becoming a cop. My experience with firearms was limited to M-16 A-1 and A-2 rifles- not handguns. My department issued me a Sig Sauer 45 caliber pistol to qualify with. Try as I may I could not fucking qualify with that beast of a gun. I was on the verge of getting kicked out of the academy. Sensing my frustration, my friend Dave approached and offered to help. I was going home to visit my parents that weekend and I asked if he wanted to tag along. He spent the better part of the weekend with me out on my parent's land showing me how to fire the gun without breaking my wrist. It was a process but eventually he got me to where I was able to shoot well. My parents instantly liked Dave. For quite awhile after his visit, my mom dropped subtle innuendos that she thought he may be "the one." I returned back to the academy the following Monday, went out to the range and passed. After we graduated, I visited him in KC and spent a long weekend with him. We kept in touch off and on through the years. A few times our friendship crossed into the sexual realm but it became obvious that we were better off as friends, not lovers. Some people come into your life for a reason and Dave sure touched mine. It's been a difficult couple of days working though losing someone who in my eyes seemed so invincible. This has made me acutely aware that no one is invincible. In closing, I hope everyone who reads this hugs their loved ones a little closer. You may never know if that may be your last goodbye. RIP my friend.  |

This is a shame, I don't know what has happened to peoples respect for one and another, It is a real shame that you lost a "real friend" I don't know that it is going to any better any time soon, Until people are held accountable for their actions, I don't see an improvement. These actions are not limited to the violence in their lives but the way they live and treat their equals. The lack of work ethics for so many, The idea that some one owes them something. It is a life style that feeds on itself.. And we wind up paying for there misguided life style, that ends up with such an atrocity like you have with your friend. Don't know what to say other than. Look forward, don't let it take you down, go forward, Dave would have wanted nothing less...........lonly

I too pay homage to someone (although I did not meet them) was willing to Stand and Serve. Sorry for your loss of a good friend. May you be safe also in your line of duty.

This is a touchy subject in today's USA, on one hand I am sorry for your loss and the tragic death of a friend and fellow officer. Truly my condolences, I must say that no one deserves to die at the hand of another or senseless violence, but the nationwide there has been an epidemic of police shootings resulting in protests and civil uprising, yet very few officers are being held accountable for their actions or getting the sensitivity training and de-escalation training required to do their already very difficult job. I understand that we as private citizens give the police and other branches of law enforcement a certain amount of power to deal with crime. I fear however that it's gotten out of hand and it will only get worse before it gets better. Again my sympathies to you, Dave's friends and family, and the entire department you both represent. JP

Way to many people are finding themselves on the wrong end of a firearm in this country for various reasons, none of them good. My condolences. Vive La Difference

We're going through a tough time in this country . There so many awesome individuals like your friend who reach out to so many in our communities in variety of ways putting their lives on the line becoming targets. I do remember reading about this in the paper the other day. I didn't realize you had a personal connection. Sounds like he was an awesome friend...RIP. You have to wonder what people are thing when they do things like this. It's sad to lose a friend to this kind of senseless mob like attitude. Police officers should be given the same respect as the President of the United States. If the President is threaten the Secret Service deals with it immediately. They should do the same to people who threaten police officers.

Sorry to hear about the loss of a good friend and mentor. There's just been so much senseless violence lately it seems as though no one is immune but especially vulnerable are the police. Pagan  Hmmmm....I know I left that wand around here somewhere!
