Seriously though

My partners killed my cat today. They'd been peacable for 7 months. He was wussing out from her this morning. No idea what sparked what as we were picking up a from rehab after a 3 month hospital stay due to west nile virus today. are naturally upset as are both of us, but what should happen next? 2 cats left in the household, he was a champion that saved his life twice. Neither of us know what to do with the devastation. Should he lose his beloved pet because I lost mine? There is no easy answer. Thoughts?

First and foremost, I'm sorry for your lost. You're right there is no easy answer - my first thought is no he should not lose his pet because two wrongs don't make a right. However, when you see the dog will you feel resentment towards it because it killed your cat? Could the dog attack a person or the other cats? If the answer to the last two questions are yes - then you probably should get rid of the dog.

Thank you for your response. I don't want to retaliate and as I told both him and the children, a dog is an animal and will do as it will. I'm not going to punish an animal for its instincts and he is incredibly patient with the kids. I'm never going to know what happened. If she taunted him beyond reason or if he just snapped because he missed his humans. There was no warning but we are putting up precautions such as not leaving him loose when we leave and blocking his way upstairs where they spend most of their time. My heart is broken, but he loves me too. I can't hate an animal. He's a good dog, but he is a dog.

I can remember many years ago when my friends dog killed my sister's little kitten. It happened so quickly but nothing was done about it except that dog was never allowed inside our garden again.

My heart goes out to you and your family/partner. If it can be determined why it happen and if can be prevent, then maybe the dog can stay and be saved. Its a bad/tough situation. Good luck and stay strong.
