Keep in mind that Airbus planes made after 1995 up graded thjeir 300 series with seats that are just a bit bigger.Boeing upgraded after 2000 on three specific models only.Find out when the specific year of the plane they are refering too or Aren't there usually numbers that we associate with weight and I think it's the same with height. It's those that are afraid of those numbers that have to
beat around the bush(no pun intended). The truth is probably better or in some cases more accurate.

Using more than all the road!

I vary between athletic and average, we all struggle with some labels. I think I saw the profile you refer to, that was a good line.

I consider myself average.

I have lived in Asia for more than 30 years and watched with dismay as the likes of KFC, McDonalds, CocaCola and all the rest of the fast-food, sugar-water and high fat/salt snacks became ubiquitous.

More than 20 per cent of the local population is overweight or obese now - up from perhaps 10 per cent back when. Of course the percentage of overweight Americans is far higher than that.

My 20-year-old son goes to university in Nashville and just flew home to Singapore this week for his summer break. He is a gym-rat . . . has an awesome body that puts mine to shame . . . and he is pretty much astonished at the difference in body-size/shape of the typical American adult relative to the typical Asian. He reckons that at least two-thirds of the adult population in Nashville is overweight - as in a BMI of at least 30.

Which begs the question - if two-thirds of the population are carrying an unhealthy amount of excess weight, then what does "average" mean ?

In my mind, I think of average as sort of a Goldilocks weight - not too skinny and not too fat . . . just right, in other words. But perhaps average - in a US context - means a BMI of 30 ? I mean look around - if more than half of everyone is that size (or larger), then isn't that average ?

I like your airplane seat example as a clear out-of-bounds marker. But better still for people on sites like this to share objective information like pounds of weight and inches of height.

Great blog topic, Soaking. Good idea to post about it.

I usually refer to myself as average build... I am not obese by any means, but like most people I could stand to lose a few pound and trim a couple of inches off my middle. But in light of comments bulehyatt made, maybe I should start referring to myself as thin to average...
Another good guideline for men would be "dickey-do". If your stomach sticks out further than your dickey do, you might have one of two problems. One can usually be fixed with diet and exercise. The other one... maybe you should concentrate on your technique.
I wonder if there is a similar guideline for women, maybe something about whether their stomach sticks out farther than their boobs do?
Regardless... as long as a person is comfortable with their body that's all that matters.
