Killing democracy

This election has been dispiriting for those who like to admire the concept of voting for candidates that govern the nation. Democracy seems like an outmoded idea. People freely choosing the representatives that effectively govern the nation with the consent of the governed. The rule of law, Due Process, equal protection, human rights. All fine concepts, except that human beings with decent behavior have to put into operation these words and make them function.

Humans seem inadequate to the task. Of course, monarchy and dictatorship seem to be worse. But the political parties and the nominating process seem to have created a monstrous and disgusting political season. Many seem unhappy with the choices facing us.

Sadly the debasement of our political process seems to be what we deserve for being so disgusting. The voters had many other options and chose the nominees fairly and squarely. We picked these people as our candidates.

Walt Kelly famously observed: "We have met the enemy, and they are us!"

So as hard as it is to admit the root problem, if you want to know who to blame, you have to look in the collective mirror and say we made this problem. We are getting the kind of government we deserve for the kind of people we are. Yes that is the problem.

No I don't think there is a good and easy solution.

Trump has said many more outrageous things than Hilary, but that does not seem to lead to adverse consequences. Politics has become a tribal sport. We pick a team and then cheer our side, regardless of the acts of our team. The informed electorate is an obsolete concept. We are the willfully uninformed and biased electorate.
