 Communication, familiarity are big. Trying to find out what a person wants in a one-night-stand sometimes does not work out. I suspect the person was trying to make a good impression and was doing what he thought you wanted and liked. If there is not enough relationship to openly communicate without offending the other person, then I think one is just "on for the ride" wherever it takes you.
