Witness the fitness

To my mind there are five great social taboos, people would rather stick their head in a cauldron of boiling oil than admit the following:

I'm a bad parent
I'm a bad pet owner
I'm not good at my job and I'm overpaid
I'm a bad driver
I'm rubbish in bed

Obviously on a site like this the latter is the one you'd like to own up to the least. An interesting contrast between the sexes is the notion of sexual improvement - women's magazines are pretty explicit with tips and hints on how to distill and finesse your bedroom experience. While sex is talked about a lot amongst men, the concept of performance, and improving it, is rather hazy.

A few years ago I had a boozy night out with one of the few friends of mine who has also used A F F and talks openly about sex and dating. I put forward the opinion that one of the key attributes of good sexual performance is fitness. My friend, who is the same height and build as me disagreed with me strongly. He cited the example of his latest FB. She was an ex-air hostess who had appeared in adverts for British Airways. He showed me a pic, she had a pretty face, clear skin, pleasant smile, nice eyes etc, she was a voluptuous beauty, easy on the eye but could never be described as athletic.

Olympic diver Tom Daley, unavailable to teenage girls, no doubt gives a good performance

My friend went on to describe in very graphic terms just how good she was in bed and how she'd made him cum twice in one session with an exceptional BJ technique. A valid response, though I was surprised my friend was so defensive, but in general men like to think their performance is excellent and there is no need to improve on it. The idea that they need to head down the gym for a few months to tone up and finally give their other half proper satisfaction really pricks their ego.

Is this something men live in denial of? In the documentary Super Size Me there is a very frank interview with Morgan Spurlock's then girlfriend (now wife) who, 10 days into the experiment, describes a sex session they have and how Spurlock's performance has gone south since he started stuffing his face with large McDonalds meals morning, noon and night. She has to work a lot harder to finish him off - perhaps an alarming indication of how his circulation has deteriorated when pumped full of sugar and saturated fat.

Jason Statham - ex international diver like Tom Daley but has the added bonus of being harder than Ross Kemp

The modern porn aesthetic now dictates that all men should be gym fit (unlike in the early days when it was fine for Ron Jeremy to have a pot belly), they can be bald, they can have a face like the back end of a bus but an eight-pack is compulsory. Some people see porn for what it is - just entertainment performed by actors - and some see it as an instructional video - demanding their partner looks the part and is capable of a full re-enactment.

It's not necessary to be a gym rat and follow porn trends to enjoy yourself and impress others, have sex on your own terms. For my part fitness feeds into acceptable body image and good circulation - it's the one decent thing in my locker!
