Speaking Out . . . No Confidence

One thing I like about the way some other governments run is their legislatures have votes of no confidence. Now, it seems to be happening here in the USA but in a slightly different fashion.

In the last few days it was trumpeted that a variety of departments and agencies were not allowed to communicate with the citizens who employ them. A response has come from a number people in those departments and agencies it seems to essentially say – fuck your gag order. They, EPA, HHS, USDA, FDA, NPS and NASA (so far), have created non-government “rogue” Twitty accounts to voice their facts. This is unprecedented in our government.

Also, today another series of votes of no confidence was cast at the State Dept. A significant number of State senior officials that deal with managing the State Department, its overseas posts and its people unexpectedly resigned or retired today. The following comment was made: “Department expertise in security, management, administrative and consular positions in particular are very difficult to replicate and particularly difficult to find in the private sector.”

In both cases these aren’t political appointees they are the people who carry out the daily work of the government. Some have been through a variety of bosses and administrations (republican and Democrat).

I"m sorry I wasn't clearer about the no confidence thing, *you* didn;t say it but a couple of news outlets used that exact phrase to make is look at though scores of workers were leaving in protest. IIRC (and it's been years since I directly talked to anyone in the foreign service) but I think it's only the political appointees who submit the pro forma resignations, I'm not sure if the lifers do it to or not.

But the important point that you hit on is that the 24/7 news cycle has put pressure on news orgs to be first and worry about fixing things later if ever.
I’ve learned over the years since cable made the news a for sale thing that you can’t trust the first version of a story when it “breaks”. I’m not sure they really “fix” things, I think they just ignore the errors like they never happened. I miss ole Walter Cronkite.

No sweat about the no confidence thing, I didn’t know other outlets had used that phrase. It would be interesting to know which people submit pro forma resignations when things change.

Yeah replicating or worse. I hear he is down to 3 possibilities all will probably replace Roe v Wade with Guns and Ammo.

Candidates for the House mid term elections start their explicit campaigns in about a year. I don't expect the GOP to lose its house majority in 2018. (OK, I could be wrong, and maybe DJT does quickly mess up bigly to miff and lose his base. But so far, he's much more pissing everyone off except his base.

With DJT's lack of diplomacy chops and loss of experience at State, do business experts move in? Maybe SOS Tillerson will want to supplement staff with MBA wonks from Harvard Business School instead of MPP wonks from Harvard's JFK School of Govt. SOS is such a huge role, I expect some policy battles later between Tillerson and Bannon.
With DJT's lack of diplomacy chops and loss of experience at State, do business experts move in? If his goal is to get richer sure obviously conflicts of interest don't matter to him.

I expect some policy battles later between Tillerson and Bannon. I don't know much about Bannon but from what I've seen so far he is just another crook.

It wasn't the entire senior staff, as one news outlet called it, it was a significant number of people, it was 4 people at the State Department and they were let go, they didn't quit.

It wasn't the vote of no confidence that some news organizations were painting it to be. These are the sorts of people who wouldn't have quit anyway. They're bureaucrats, not ideologues and pretty much assume that they would be in those jobs administration after administration.

The real question here is if in pruning the tree of federal government, President Trump isn't pruning too much of the institutional knowledge necessary to keep things moving smoothly.

Which points up my frustration with the media, I've read this story in a few media outlets and it seems as though most of the outlets are getting their information from the same two sources (one of which is pretty staunchly anti-Trump.

The problem is that while everyone is in a dither about this, no one is talking the *real* issues around what the administration is doing. The Minnesota state legislature is floating a list of about 30 services they want to remove from their state healthcare. This is a test for a pulling some or all of those same services from the ACA. There's a proposal on the table to eliminate the National Endowment for the Humanities and to privatize PBS.

Don't take your eyes off of the right hand and keep your eye on the left one folks!
B, we seem to have different sources. Nothing I read (3 sources) said the entire senior staff. Also, there was a second group who are leaving other than the 4 senior staff. Also, per what I read, none were let go, 2 stated Trump’s people were trying to get them to stay – one was prior to today’s news. I would link the articles I read but the sit here doesn’t allow. The “whole staff” did submit resignations prior to Trump’s January inauguration as is customary and required.

I do think the media in general is too quick to get out “breaking news” and sensationalize, which is why I try to source multiple avenues of information.

I did not say or read that there was a vote of no confidence – I used that term as a form of comparison. I agree Trump is losing much of the institutional knowledge necessary to keep things running smoothly.

There are multiple problems happening, in multiple states, in the wake of his questionable ascension and actions. Some have been widely reported and some less so – too many to list at the moment. There isn’t much that he is doing that is in the public interest IMO.
