Thoughts On Hugh Hefner & This “Lifestyle”

As a I, like many other guys, looked at Playboy magazines. It was probably the first time I saw a naked woman. I also checked out the cartoons and bits of humor. As I got older, I started reading product reviews and the articles – by Hunter Thomson among others.

I would also watch from time to time the late night TV show Playboy had. There were musical and cultural guests on. Along with the “Rat Pack”, Steve McQueen, Johnny Carson and others Playboy was the definition of ‘cool’.

I lived in West Los Angeles at that time. My grandfather lived down the street from the mansion. I got my first speeding ticket (of many), within an hour of my grandfather giving me his car (’64 Impala SS), that was on Beverly Glenn just south of Sunset Blvd – essentially behind the mansion. I never actually saw the mansion, or Mr. Hefner, in person. A few times I latched on to (maybe borrowed) a Playboy key card and took a few dates to dinner at the club when I had the coin to do so. The food and drinks there were excellent.

Some scorn the Playboy magazine and “lifestyle” as sexist etc. – that may be true. However, it was also a vehicle that got us to where we (men AND women) can be on the inter/web/nets on dating/sex sites, naked, talking about sex in detail and getting together in non-traditional relationships that were once scorned. If it weren't for Hef and Playboy we may not be here. He opened the door to things that had been kept hidden and in a way that was acceptable for the times, which led to it becoming “normal”.

For that he deserves many, many

Someone else may have started it if he had not, but who knows if they would have been as accepted or successful.

I would have posed for playboy.. why not
And could have started a good modeling career from that.

I remember reading Cynthia Heimel's column religiously... a friend's bathroom had about 20 years of past issues stacked next to the toilet and damn if I didn't have to pee every single time I went over there!
I recall getting into Hunter Thompson via Playboy.

Hefner gave the writers an acceptable venue to get their articles see by more readers. The idea Hefner had for the magazine pushed boundaries that had been taboo.

Great post McScally. If he did anything, he certainly pushed boundaries, and a few people became enlightened on a few things along the way.
Thanks McKilty, pushing boundaries and enlightenment are significant achievements for anyone.

Did you say you read it or was it more like ruined it.
I remember seeing Hunter S.at A S U one night he spoke in a classroom
or should I say mummbled most of the night.
The first thing he did when he showed up was take his pants off
and cracked open a bud tall from the six pack he brought him
And he said"how the fuck do you people live in this fuckin heat!"
OK, read and ruined. Thompson was another unique character, he and Hefner were an interesting pairing.

    I would agree.

Although the more I read about his treatment of the "girls in his mansion", the more I think he was personally a huge *$$hole. But that is because he was very controlling - and treated them like women in the 50's.

    Strange, eh?

    What an interesting guy.
I've heard similar things but, if true . . . they choose to stay. Yes very interesting to say the least.
