How does this online dating work anyhow?

I have been at it now for a few months, I know I am a bit reserve and to a point shy... I am me but I am getting nowhere! I have made some friends which is nice for messaging and I am happy about that but still this is a dating site. I am beginning to believe that the site is split into lets say groups:

1) The majority are wishing they had sex but will not go further than wishing and dreaming...

2) There couples which is great but most want women but not men and if they want men no single men allowed!

3) Paid services which is fine for those that wish to pay.

I know my age throws many off and in truth I understand that although I knew someone my age years back that was dating a 24 year old and she sure as heck did not have issues...

I have not dated in 45 years have no freaken clue what I am doing no less the dating from online thingy...

So any and all pointers welcome!
