 We do both. I will go on a date with someone we both trust. Sometimes we will end up in a room or back at his house. My husband will also go on a date or sometimes the female half of the couple wants two or more guys at a time, as I do sometime. Then there are times we will be together and just get in a big pile. It depends on what all agree or want to do at the time.

 It's strictly the preference of the couples involved, but I feel having sex with someone in a room alone is more intimate and can lead to other types of involvement, where as having sex with others in the same room is something you are doing together, just for sex and fun.

Indeed, the 3 some scenarios we have experienced always have extended moments of someone feeling like a third wheel and relegated to voyeur status, which can be fun in itself... but the same room full swap scenario becomes a greater distraction... we're always looking to see what the other person is doing.
