Legislation finally passes banning single use plastic bags!

Michael Gorman CBC writes:
Nova Scotia passes ban on single use plastic bags
This time next year single use plastic bags will be no more ..finding one may be the hardest thing to do almost like where's Waldo..lol
The Legislation takes effect in one year giving grocers ,retailers and the public time to make adjustments...There are a few exemptions and those are for the time being dry cleaner bags, the bags used by garages to wrap tires bags used for bulk foods and fish sold from pet stores...but these things are under review and solutions may be in order..
The Minister for the Environment says it may not take a full year for retailers to make the changes they say many members of the public have already made the switch to reusable bags ...In January the giant food chain Sobeys have announced there will no longer be plastic bags available ..They go on to say their patrons are very happy to do their part and bring in their own bags. More is being done to find a solution to the bulk plastic bags , deli containers and bakery products which are also in clear rigid plastic...
**** Sobeys is my go to food chain the variety , and friendly staff make the trip worthwhile..they call you by name and hardly ever forget a face...I have been using my own grocery bags for a very long time and dont buy many prepackaged items...its hard sometimes but there is always a solution or alternative way of buying..
Way To Go Nova Scotia!!!

omfg yes i seen that and the group that is trying to clean that up is fighting a losing battle because of those countries who does not have any waste disposal in place ..it is sad because the poorer countries are on their own ..no one has helped in the slightest to show any way for them to get with the recycling at all...thanks

I know !
my country loves using the poor countries as an excuse for changing, and we make sure those countries have no way to get better so we have the excuse.

Though we pay them to stay celibate ! so maybe condoms are the only rubber we worry about.

Back in 15 Dallas attempted to ban them, making stores charge a nickel "tax" if you asked for plastic. People adjusted and started using reusable bags. You could see the difference outside - no bags stuck in trees.

Our idiot governor-elect Greg Abbott whined that it was the end of the Texas free-market model and Texas is being California-ized, and you may not even be noticing it.

Manufacturers of plastic bags sued Dallas saying Texas state law prohibits taxes on containers. The city council, rather than fight, repealed it and bags are back to littering the environment again.

My municipality and others near by passed plastic bag ordinances a few years ago. The attitude to be more eco conscious is slowly spreading...locally. Now, if only we can elect new federal government officials in the US who feel these seemingly small changes (as well as larger ones) are necessary...

as if they weren't bad enough,

sometimes it seems as if the cashiers get a bonus

for using as many as possible, doesnt it?

i went to wal____

for an online pickup, and in addition to two large items,

neither of which could have been bagged,

the additional three small items i got

came in two bags. 3 small items - 2 bags. really?

the ban may have issues in implementation,

and there will always be appeals under one excuse or another,

but i, as one of many, will be damn glad to see less of them

in parking lots, along every highway, in trees,

in the news choking wildlife, and hopefully, in our food.

and as far as recycling goes, although ive done neither,

i have to believe itd be better to live next to

a paper recycling plant than a plastic recycling plant.

what do YOU think?

"well only get through this if we work together. if we dont, none of us will"

This is happening in the States , too... but a grocery store in Vancouver BC came up with a creative way to stop customers from using store plastic bags. The grocery store printed embarrassing slogans on its plastic bags .

For example , printed on the stores plastic bag it would say, in large lettering, Psychiatric Pharmaceuticals, or Colon Care, or Adult Video Emporium...

I have been online reading about the countries that are less fortunate than we are in regards to recycling ..But what i dont get is people in the poor countries that dont care about recycling why dont they at least burn some of their garbage? if their heads of the country dont care enough to set things in motion then someone should be smart enough to implement that...

we have paid 5 cents for alot of years to have groceries put in plastic bags but i am a frugal spender and i have bought so many reuseable bags that i have i think about 30 now ..maybe a bit more ...I wont spend 5 cents on a plastic bag its not worth the 5 cents.. I dont understand why council didnt fight back but some are non believers that the planet has problems and turns a blind eye,,thanks

great for your municipal council to do that we need more and i believe that is making extreme progress .larger steps are necessary for sure but small ones forge a nice path for large ones in the long run......it is nice to see more and more conscientious people ..thanks

well it may seem that way to alot of people but its not true ..I worked in a grocery store and the public was way more apt to squeal and get the cashier in trouble if he or she didnt ask if they wanted plastic bags..that happened alot because i didnt feel that some people needed a bag for just one small item but they would holler if they didnt get that bag..I seen people buy smokes and ask for a bag just to go outside take the smokes out of the bag and put that same bag in the garbage..i see a few toss the bag away...

So your saying the drug smugglers, and coyotes smuggling people, should turn to truck loads of Baggies & Hefty bags, and such into Canada ?? Like once was done with ciggys from North Carolina with no tax stamps, and booze FROM Canada into the USA during prohibition?? HMMMM I guess I better stock up on my Ziplocks in all sizes here !!

For quite a bit of the people in those poor countries it is a choice between getting the next meal or re-cycling. Guess what, they will choose survival, as humans we worry about the things that are right in front of us that have a direct impact vs something abstract in the future..
