According to google there are nearly 130 million books in the world. Even the most prolific reader can only read a tiny fraction of the books available. So you need some way of deciding which books to read. Often just the front cover is enough to let you know a book doesn't interest you. If that's not enough, front cover, back cover, title page, acknowledgements and table of contents. Sure that's a little more than just the cover but not much. You don't have to read the book itself in most cases to know whether you're interested. We're not really talking about books when we say this though, usually it's really about people. Once after hooking up for an oral session after a night at the pub the woman told me her friend (who was more experienced) had told her "that guy will know what he is doing". She had quite accurately judged me "by my cover". Here's the thing: people judge by appearances. No matter how much you think they shouldn't, they do and they will continue to do so. Railing against that is a fools errand. The appropriate response is to make some effort to present yourself well, not waste your time complaining about people judging you unfairly. Have you noticed that publishers are using similar covers for different books? And, very often an author has similar covers for all their books, which makes it confusing for those of us who read a lot and can’t remember if we’ve read a book before until we are well into it. Speaking to an author he told me Barnes and Noble determined which cover he should go with. As for the images we project. It’s how you present yourself more than what you look like, the personality projected, even in a photograph. Though there is the stereotypical attractive, each of us, are drawn to particular types.
