Early 80's Orange County Punk Scene
Early 80's Orange County Punk Scene I saw it all at the Cuckoo's Nest, on Placentia, in Costa Mesa. Black Flag, Circle Jerks, TSOL, and a bunch of bands I can't remember. People hocking luggies on the band members. Folks jumping up on stage then jumping off into the pit. Violent slam dancing in front of the stage, with them also getting spit on and beer thrown on and generally having a good old time. I was somewhat older than the punk rockers there, so I stayed to the outer wall, drinking my beer, stacking my cups for ammo, and taking it all in. Snorting Mollies from the web of my hand... Back in Houston, I'm not sure the scene ever got that intense. I saw the Plasmatics at Cullen Hall at U of H. The lead chick told the audience they weren't into being spit on. But, in the end, she smashed a perfectly good guitar. I saw the Dead Boys at some joint off of Gessner and 59 that I can't remember the name of. I still dig the music. It's real upbeat |

Right this sec it's John Hiatt's Perfectly Good Guitar. And for the chicks in Canada it's Neil Young's Cowgirls in the Sand. And Fred Eaglesmith's I like Trains.

And they wrote it all up as the progress of man

So I was working floors on a Global Marine drillship in the Gulf and a crewmate came back to Houston with me, And I decided I would take him to this rock and roll bar on Shepherd called the Old Plantation. I had been there many times before. So we walk up and the guy at the gate took my cover fee money with an overly-friendly run of his fingers across mine. I thought it a might odd, but on in we went. Once inside, I quickly realized there were no women, and that the joint had turned queer in my absence! Oh the shame... Well, we drank one bourbon/water and made our way out of that joint. Never to return. I remember for some dumbass reason I turned my emptied drink glass upside down on the bar as I departed. I'm a rebel...

The local Pacifica station has a music show run by a (Grateful) Deadhead. And last show he had people calling into the station telling of their various experiences at Dead concerts in Houston and elsewhere. Crazy shit. I was never into them in my younger years, but have learned to enjoy them in my my latter ones.
