IM. Does it really work?

So curious what others experience has been with . Does it work? My results are mixed best. Mostly no replies, then all of a sudden I do get a reply. We for a few rounds back and forth, then nothing. They are still showing as online and on but there’s no reply. Then other times it shows that they read them but don’t reply. Are people just not courteous these days or is IM not a viable form of communication?

 It's very sticky... it shows people online when they have probably left over an hour ago.. it also logs you in automatically if you're on a mobile, which is really annoying if you just want to check messages etc.
I was on it last night and I had 7 IM's, I was already chatting to 3 ppl who are in my area, and 4 more from around the country that I just couldn't chat to, and it kept missing messages to and from so it was all a bit hectic.
If you're gold, I would use the email system, if you're not, you just have to take a chance.

 IM is twitchy, and not so workable as the previous one it replaced. At least with "the old one" it would work once you refreshed it every now and then.

It will go dormant after a certain amount of time, if no messages are coming in, or going out. It will show as "busy" when that happens. Users also have the option of switching to "Busy" when they first log in.

Your best bet, though not 100% guaranteed, is to send a message through the site's email system. This does present a challenge if you're not a gold member, however.
