Toys in the Attic

The mind is the most erotic part of the human body. It is also a wonderful playground to escape to contemplate the deeper meaning of the day’s experiences or the works of artists that touch your spirit. This is about all of those thoughts that so occupy your mind that they cause you to tune out everything that is going on around you. Like toys for the mind you can’t seem to put them down. After posting on other blogs for many years I finally found the inspiration to start my own.

The Time of Your Life

I am a huge Green Day fan, and in my middle age I have braved the mosh pit just to be front and center at their concerts. I think their entire body of work is amazing and I naturally connected to their signature ballad Good Riddance – Time of Your Life.

"Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test, and don't ask why
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time”

“So take the photographs, and still frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial
For what it's worth it was worth all the while”

“It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.”

There is a certain irony that a song about a breakup has become an anthem of positive reminiscence and reflection. Even the songwriter has admitted that “I hope you had the time of your life” was penned as bitter sarcasm but he has later embraced it as a positive bid farewell.

When I was navigating a challenging career change several years ago, the message “so make the best of this test and don’t ask why” told me that even bad things happen for a reason and I needed to accept that the lessons learned would serve me later in life and they have.

And when special things in my life have ended when I didn’t really want them to I accepted that as well and have chosen to cherish the “photographs and still frames in my mind”.

I suppose a journey without turning points has less risk but many times the real beauty and rewards in life lie in the fringes. If bad things happen, make them a good riddance, learn from them but keep moving. And if you lose something you truly value, don’t be sad because it’s over, be happy because it happened. Something doesn’t have to be forever to be the time of your life.

On my tablet I subscribe to an RSS feed that sends daily motivational quotes. Today’s collection included a very simple quote by Emily Dickinson “Forever is comprised of nows” which has somehow gotten stuck in my head. I sensed I just don’t put enough importance on “now” and maybe I waste a lot of “now”. It seems like I’m always dreaming or hoping about the future which isn’t bad as long as I’m doing something to make it come true. Unfortunately, too often it seems like I’m sitting around just waiting for it to happen.

I see it in relationships too where there is so much emphasis on what it could be or what it should be that you overlook the “now”. Sometimes it is accepting things that are unfulfilling and expecting them to change and not doing anything about it. At other times it is just a matter of not taking chances because the future impact is uncertain. Great “nows” do need a purpose because as Ms. Dickinson points out they are not just our today but part of our forever.

I have always liked the old saying “yesterday is history, tomorrow’s a mystery but today is a gift, that’s why they call it the present”. Too many days I feel I squander that gift and so today I am committing myself to putting more meaning into to each ”now”. Maybe it is time to start assembling a collection of great “nows” that is worthy of forever.

Part of the fun will be trying to figure out what that is.

Do you make the most of each now?

Make Them Disappear

I have always loved music of all genres where the lyric have spoken to me, lyrics that seem to perfectly describe one’s feelings or encapsulates a special moment in time. For many years now, the song Disappear by Hoobastank takes me back to a very special feeling of being with someone that completely captivates your soul. When you are with them time stands still and you are totally unaware of everything else going on around you.

The lyrics go:

Do you know, that everytime you're near
Everybody else seems far away
So can you come and make them disappear
Make them disappear and we can stay

Finding someone that when you are in their presence can make the rest of the world disappear is one of life’s most precious gifts. Someone whose aura is so compelling it forever changes the way you see life and the way you see yourself. Someone that opens your eyes to a part of yourself you didn’t know existed or showed you their own unique inner beauty that was beyond your imagination.

Having someone that makes the rest of the world disappear can be very special part of a long-term relationship and it can also be very special when it happens as part of a very casual meeting.

Life is a journey beautifully filled with opportunities for perpetual growth, the most precious are experiencing someone that introduces you to parts of life you may of overlooked or never knew existed. Someone that truly let you see their inner beauty, that shared that their unique perspective on life from the core of their soul. And from that perspective allowed you to see yourself in an entirely new and spectacular way.

I am forever indebted to the wonderful women that have shared part of my journey and have made the rest of the world disappear.
